Travel inspiration: the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia

White, whiter, whitest. Anyone visiting Andalusia will feast their eyes on the hundreds of white villages you will encounter here. They are almost dazzling, but above all each one is beautiful. One even more beautiful than the other ... But what are really the most beautiful white villages of Andalusia? We would like to share our favorites with you!

Grazalema

In the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park lies the white village of Grazalema, with tall green mountains in the background. The Plaza de España, Grazalema's central square, has a cozy atmosphere as standard. The many bars and restaurants are "guilty" of this. Sit down for a plate of Spanish tapas, then get lost in the charming, picturesque streets of the village. Fun fact: Grazalema was an important site for the textile industry in the nineteenth century. With as many as seven factories making wool products for the rest of Spain and some other countries. The arrival of railroads in the country dealt a death blow to this textile industry in Grazalema; the village's mountainous location made it incapable of a train connection, thus losing out to other Spanish places.

Arcos de la Frontera

Another favorite white village of ours is undoubtedly Arcos de la Frontera. The special thing about this village is its elevation: Arcos de la Frontera is located on a rock and that rock is anything but flat. So be prepared for some good leg muscle training when visiting this village. In fact, the best part of it all is at the highest point: the sandstone castle of Arcos de la Frontera. Includes stunning views of the rest of the village and its surroundings. By the way, we are not the only ones who are fans of Arcos de la Frontera: already in 1962 this village was declared a national monument because of its spectacular location and impressive architecture. Well worth a visit!

Frigiliana

We already wrote it: what is the most beautiful white village in Andalusia is subjective. Nevertheless, the village of Frigiliana has been regularly declared the most beautiful village in Spain. And we understand that choice! The same goes for Frigiliana: be prepared for a lot of climbing. This village is also characterized by the different heights at which it is built. And that is exactly what makes it so much fun. If you don't feel like climbing, you can take the tourist train in Frigiliana. Besides the hundreds of white houses, Frigiliana has plenty of other attractions. Thus, history is almost palpable in the Historical Museum of Frigiliana, the old fountain Fuente Vieja is a real eye-catcher and once the church San Antonio in this village steals the show. In other words, a visit to Frigiliana is not going to disappoint you!

Mijas

About thirty kilometers from Malaga and only a fifteen-minute drive from the sea lies the beautiful white village of Mijas, which is another Valhalla to get lost in. Because Mijas is also built on a rock, four hundred meters above sea level, you can choose to explore this village by Tuk-Tuk. The Tuk-Tuk will take you past all the sights of Mijas, saving you a lot of effort! But... It is also a treat to explore Mijas on foot. Wandering through the many narrow streets and beautiful squares ... For garden lovers: be sure to visit the botanical garden La Muralla.

PS Mijas is also our home base! You can park the camper at our parking lot or upstairs in the village at the general carpark near the donkeys.
