The green Spanish road trip

Madrid - Siguënza - Pamplona - La Rioja - San Sebastian - Bilbao - Picos de Europa - Costa de Cantábria - Costa Verde - La Coruña - Santiago de Compostela - Costa verde (Portugal) - Porto - Zamora - Salamanca - Ávila - Segóvia - Madrid

This route through northeastern Spain enters the Rioja wine region via Pamplona over rolling mountain roads, before driving down the rugged northern coast via the fashionable town of San Sebastian. Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia all offer natural beauty, tranquility and space. But also culture, such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. We also travel past picturesque fishing villages, such as San Vicenta de la Barquera and one of the most beautiful villages in the north: Santillana del Mar. Not to be missed is the route through the impressive Picos de Europa near the Parque de Covadonga, where old mountain villages alternate with exuberant nature. While we are in Galicia, we quickly cross over to Portugal to visit the Parque de Montesinho via Porto. On the route there are many campsites, RV parks and overnight stops for campers!

Alternative: if time does not permit traveling all this, take the following shortened route. After the 'Picos', turn off to Oviedo via Gijón, and then to Zamora. Especially between Mieres and Léon, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful views of the Cordillera Cantábrica.
