We drive from Malaga airport directly to Portugal to start our road trip through the Algarve in Monte Gordo.
Monte Gordo has a beautiful beach, the campsite is just okay. The sanitary facilities are old but clean. The next day we drive to Cabanas. Camping Ria Formosa. We stay here for two nights and visit Tavira by bicycle.
Then we drive to Faro. We park our motorhome in a free parking space and cycle into the city. Wonderfully quiet so we can cycle through all the shopping streets. We leave the city and look for a campsite in Quarteira, but unfortunately it is closed. We drive to Camping Albufeira, first a ride through the place itself. From Albufeira we take a trip through the countryside; we visit Paderne, Laule, Salir and Alte. Nice ride but we are not surprised. Via Silves we drive to Lagos, where we stayed on the Orbitur camping Valverde.
We go to the beach cycling. It is wonderful here, so we go again the next day. In the afternoon we drive to Sagres. We spend the night in the parking lot at the fort. The next morning we go by bike to Cabo de Sao Vicente and drink coffee at Terra with a freshly baked pasteis de nata. Beautiful view from the last tip of Europe. We get our certificate with the purchase of the ‘letzte Bratwurst for America’.
We cycle back and take the camper to Aljezur and take Praia do Amando with us. Nature, the beach, the sea..magnificent!
We sleep at Campsite Serrano in the middle of the forest.
The next day we drive further up to Odeceixe. We find a beautiful route and a great beach there, with great waves. We sleep in Sao Miguel, after uncle agent has assured us that we cannot stay here, that would cost 230 euros: (We decide not to go to Monchique the next day, but back to the coast and to Praia do Borderia. The beaches here are so beautiful and the weather is so beautiful We sleep in Praia da Luz In the morning we do a round of the boulevard we cycle back and take the motorhome with us.
We take the A22 and drive back to the border in one go. Western Portugal has certainly surprised us. From Praia da Luz to Odeceixe.. we loved it!
We deliberately avoided the crowds because of Covid. The west offered us plenty of space, lots of sun, good temperature and beautiful nature.
So… .. a successful trip!
