Bird watching trip to Extremadura

April 13, 2015

The last week of March and the first of April we rented a motorhome for the second time at Spanjecamper. The warm welcome at the airport almost felt like coming home.

After the usual expert and extensive explanation of Frank we were already an hour after arrival in Malaga to our first stop, in Fuenta de Piedra, a brackish water lake where in the good time of the year sometimes 20,000 flamingos breed. Many beautiful bird species can be seen in the adjacent lakes like Steltkluten, Grass singers, Cetti`s singer, Waterral, and in the vicinity a lot of Hoppen, Kleine Kestrel and Little Owl. The lake Salobral lies between Cordoba and Granada. That is perhaps the best place for seeing the white-headed duck. We saw at least 90 besides many Eaten Grebes, Dod boots, Crown Ducks, Great and Small Reed Warbler, Small Blackcap, Bearded Warbler, Marsh Harrier and many Spanish sparrows that nest in the riparian vegetation.

In the Extremadura it is natural to search for the real steppe species such as Small and Large Stairs. Of the last we saw even more than 100 copies sometimes in full court. But also Grielen, Wit- and Zwartbuikzandhoenders, Kalanderleuwerik and the first Greyhound harriers that arrived from the wintering area in Senegal.

Monfrague is a must for every extremadura traveller. We saw beautiful Imperial Eagle with prey at “portilla el Tietar” and at least 6 Black storks at “Salto el gitano”. Also Red-brimmed Swallow, Barn Swallow, Alpine Swift, Blue rock-thrush and Egyptian Vulture next to the many Vale and some Monk-vultures there. Surprisingly beautiful we found the Sierra de San Pedro. It is really quiet here. We did not even see any bird-watchers for 4 days. But many birds including beautiful 3 fighting Hawk eagles, Golden eagle, many Monk vultures, Gray kite, lots of Blue magpies, European canaries and Gray buntings.

Special were the stops along a few rivers such as the Rio Guadiana and Rio Zujar. There were a lot of Little Woodpeckers, lots of kingfishers, but also Pouches, the first Nightingales and in 2 locations even Visotter. Along the rio Zujar we even saw 4 playing at the same time at a kind of raised nest heap.

The above list is only a selection. The Extremadura province is really “top of the bill” when it comes to watching birds.

The camper, from our reliable partner Spain camper, is really great here. We did not experience any problems and most good bird spots are easily accessible by motorhome.
